I am nuts for doing this.
I don’t think there’s a thing in the world besides my family that I love more than dairy and most especially eggs and cottage cheese. I have boiled eggs every morning, omelettes sometimes for lunch or dinner, cereal with red milk at least once and sometimes twice a day. And if you have a noticed a theme beyond dairy in the above menu, you too must be addicted to caffeine because coffee goes great with eggs and toast or an omelette or even cereal. So.
For the next 31 days I’ll have neither eggs nor coffee and I will likely complain a lot about it.
A fair question at this point would be, “Why, then, are you going raw?” and the answer is sort of a combination of things:
- I have a personal goal in life to encourage the proliferation of adult science experiments, especially those aided by web technologies.
- I want to bond with my co-workers because they are each and everyone good people.
- If there is a way to be beautiful, healthy, wise, win friends and influence people, etc. through diet alone, then I am obligated to at least try it.
And here are a few other things you might want to know about me:
- I once weighed 160 pounds more than I do today. I lost that weight (by eating less and moving more) about five years ago and have maintained a healthy weight since.
- I am insulin resistant and have not eaten very much sugar (and by sugar I include alcohol, fruit and starchy vegetables like corn and potatoes) for the past year and a half. This diet does wonders for my metabolism and mental clarity. I am part curious, part concerned about what a raw diet that includes fruit on a daily basis will mean for my blood sugar levels.
- I will be traveling on three separate occasions in January – Philadelphia, Ft. Worth and Asheville, NC – and suspect it will be challenging to remain raw on the road.
Okay, that’s all for now. Just 24.5 hours and counting ’til my eggless, coffeeless, rawful world.

Holy shit! Good luck!!
It would be great to do a collaborative website called “Adult Science Experiments” or “Human Tinkering” and invite several people to propose, launch, and document experiments. Even better if they were all science museum folk–could be a good way to encourage visitors to think similarly about body as petri dish.
Nina, woman. We should talk. I have been thinking non-stop about this adult science experiment thing.
Good luck with the caffeine thing. Last time I did a month without coffee the headache lasted 11 days. Do they make raw aspirin?
Although I am far too much of a wiener baby to join Beck in this month-long raw business, I have promised to not eat or prepare neither hot dogs nor quesadillas at all in January–two of her totally favorite, decidedly NOT raw meals. Plus I’ll totally practice tossing raw pistachios at her so she can catch ‘em in her mouth.
I find the idea of various adult science experiments really interesting. I would be tempted to try some out.
Good luck.

I’m feeling this “Human Tinkering” idea, too. I’d like to get in on the rap session or experiment recruitment/gathering/participation too.
Keep me posted.
Hi! You returned the cheese to me at Whole Foods today. And, as promised, I’m checking out your blog! I wouldn’t say you’re necessarily “nuts” for doing this…I just don’t think I’d have the determination or willpower! And, as much as you say you love dairy, I’m sorry you had to part with your cheese…
I’m gonna keep checking in to see how it’s going. Take care and good luck!
Cherie, it’s so cool that you stopped by! Be sure to check back, I’m going to blog about the cheese tonight.
